Puppy Dog Rabies Shots for Harley, my dog.
This is my dog Harley, a Golden Retriever. He is 6 years old and we vaccinate him only once a year. Of course I live with him and I would notice right away if he has any issues. For people we recommend seeing once a year, it is important that the puppies get the puppy vaccination. We start out when the puppies are 7 to 8 weeks old, and continue with the vaccination every 3 weeks until they turn 16 weeks old. So, after 4 months the puppies get their last distemper and rabies vaccination at which time they get their tags and certificates.

The typical vaccinations administered are distemper, optional bordetella, lyme vaccine and rabies. The most common vaccine people get for their pets is the distemper/rabies combination because it is required by law. Some dogs are at risk for fecal camping or ticks (which can transmit lyme disease). Bordetella is an optional vaccine that dogs get if they go to kennels or puppy schools. So, those are some of the vaccinations. They start out at 2 months old and finish at 4 months old. From that point on, it would be just once a year. At the once-a-year visit, rabies, distemper and other optional vaccines are given. A heartworm test and a fecal test are also given. These are the things done on a yearly basis.

Besides vaccinations, we take steps that would help evaluate the health condition of your dog. We usually start at the top of the head. The first thing we do is look at the eyes using an opthalmoscope, checking for redness, inflammation or infection. Then we look at the teeth and make sure they are clean and healthy; that there is no excessive tartar buildup or damaged teeth.

Ears are a big problem with dogs. They might have ear mites or ear infections. We use a videoscope that looks down in the ear canal, transmitting the image to a TV monitor so that both we and the owners see the inside of the ear. Things we look for are polyps, bacteria and sometimes yeast and a lot of times, small insects called mites that could cause a lot of scratching. If your dog scratches itself a lot, chances are it has ear mites.
Puppy Dog Rabies Shots checks for skin problems.
We check the coat, looking for fleas, skin infections typically called hot spots or thinning of the hair coat that might indicate a metabolic issue such as a thyroid problem. We check the heart using a stethoscope to make sure the heart has a normal sound and a normal beat and that the dog does not have arrhythmia or heart murmurs. We check the limbs, especially with bigger dogs which are susceptible to hip dysplasia. It seems each breed has its own concern that we try to address.
Puppy Dog Rabies Shots takes 15 minutes to keep your pet healthy.
It takes about 15 minutes to do the visual exam and by that time, we have the heartworm test results back, we’ve done the vaccinations and if everything looks okay, they go home and they get a reminder a year later. This keeps them in good health. We’ll talk about behavioral issues, food and the type of diet they are on, their weight. So, these are some of the things we do to help keep your pets in good health, since they are unable to talk to us.
